This year marks 100 years since the end of the Great War and the conclusion of a programme of events over the last 4 years, remembering each year of the Great War. It was a great honour and a privilege for me to be the Mayor of Llanelli in attending many of these events. It was especially wonderful to see the huge turnout of the people of Llanelli for the remembrance service, showing the profound respect our town has for our armed services and the sacrifice of previous and current generations.
HMS Tenchant
Every new British Naval Submarine is associated with a Town in the UK. In 1984 when HMS Trenchant was commissioned, it was associated with Llanelli and since that time, the town has formed a longstanding relationship with the ship and it’s crew. This year, as Mayor, I hosted the crew of HMS Trenchant in the Mayor’s Parlour. It was a great evening and I really enjoyed speaking to members of the crew who were fantastically good company.
Oh What A Lovely War
Llanelli Youth Theatre have been involved in a series of commemorative events such as a living history exhibition and culminating in the production of Oh What a Lovely War in the Ffwrness Theatre. Although a musical about the Great War may sound profoundly disrespectful at first appearance, this was an emotive anti-war commentary which was very tastefully done by Llanelli Youth Theatre. The group also visited Belgium to learn more about the war and pay their respects.
